Let's Play Final Fantasy IV Episode 1

I grew up playing Final Fantasy games, though I technically started with the original Final Fantasy for the NES (despite being too young to take the game seriously.) Final Fantasy II (or IV in Japan) however, was the first Final Fantasy I really started playing with a serious passion for it. I mean, the characters we saw and played as, the story that was being told to us, the challenging bosses I fought against (well they were challenging at the time), it was things like this that kept me glued to my TV and SNES.

Looking back on it... it didn't age well... at all (but since this is the SNES ver. I'm talking about, that's no surprise). It's a bit confusing playing again with poor "Engrish" translations and even more confusing items to use (How do you translate a potion into "Cure1" as an item!?) Thankfully though, during Final Fantasy Chronicles, FFIV got re-released with better translations and even a challenging ver. to boot.

Then come the GBA days, once again it got re-released with FFIV Advance, which was pretty much the same game as the previous one, but now with a near end game party switch option and even a bonus dungeon you can access with New Game+ (where more of the dungeon is unlocked with each character you've cleared the game with).

Afterwards, FFIV got an in-game sequel called FFIV: The After Years. In a sense, it was still the same game for the original one, but now with more to explore and even more characters to play as with a new threat looming over our heroes.

It was originally released only for the Nintendo Wii (via WiiWare if memory serves me right?) until the PSP released the FFIV Complete Collection that included the original FFIV, FFIV: After Years and FFIV Interlude (which in my opinion should've been just an OVA cutscene instead. Seriously, the most pointless 2 hours wasted away IN A FRIGGIN RPG, HOW THE HELL DO YOU DO THAT!!?)

As you can imagine, seeing as how I grew up with FFIV the most, it is easily my most favorite Final Fantasy Game/Series of all time. The point I'm trying to make here is that around the time I was ready to quit my job at Taco B(H)ell, Final Fantasy IV once more got re-released for the Nintendo DS.

It had very good graphics (or about as good as a NDS could make when compared to the Nintendo 64) and even for some scenes had voice-acted cutscenes. I was once again ready to travel to the world of FFIV and relive my childhood all over again... and yet, I hated it.

No seriously, when you finish a long and eventful game, it should makes you feel glad that you beat it. Playing this ver. of FFIV just made me go, "Ah, f*cking finally! It took friggin long enough!"

Granted over all, it's still decent, but this is not what I wanted in my Final Fantasy game. Why is that you may ask? Join me and Bohepans the Third as we discuss the major differences between the previous versions of this, and this one in particular as we play Final Fantasy IV (via Steam)!
