Wildfires burn in New Mexico, California

Hundreds of people have left their homes in parts of the west and southwest U.S. as wildfires burn out of control.

In Los Angeles County California firefighters say drought-like conditions and high winds are fueling the flames... and are also making it difficult to put out the fires.

Nicknamed the "Powerhouse", the California fire has already destroyed six homes and is threatening at least 1000 more. Officials say they don't expect it to be extinguished before mid-week.

And in New Mexico- more dry weather, hot temperatures and wind are to blame for wildfires that have spread quickly through the state's steep mountainous terrain.

People in at least 150 homes have been evacuated.

Officials from the forestry agency said they haven't seen drought conditions this bad since the 1950's.
