Firefighters battle UK plant blaze

British firefighters continued to battle a huge blaze at a plastics recycling plant in England on Monday in an incident which began on Sunday night.

Senior fire officers confirmed that Chinese lanterns were the cause of the fire at the Jayplas depot, which produced a 6,000 ft pall of smoke.

Some 200 firefighters were called to the plant in Smethwick, with three of them later taken to hospital.

Around 100,000 tonnes of recycling material were involved in the fire.

There are now calls for an urgent review into the use of Chinese lanterns after the blaze, which caused £6 million worth of damage to the recycling centre.
