More than 20 men, women, and children narrowly escaped death and injuries as 30 percent of a 15-year-old, three-story villa collapsed minutes after they evacuated. Estimated between 50 to 100 feet in diameter, the sinkhole causing the collapse occurred at the Summer Bay Resort near Disney World.

In addition to being famed as the home of Disney World, Florida is widely known for its sinkholes. The holes are mostly caused by the underlying limestone rock being eroded by acidic groundwater and Florida’s severe weather.

Most recently, more than 20 men, women, and children narrowly escaped death and injuries as 30 percent of a 15-year-old, three-story villa collapsed minutes after they evacuated. The American Red Cross assisted the guests who left their belongings behind in the now condemned buildings.

Estimated between 50 to 100 feet in diameter, the sinkhole causing the collapse occurred at the Summer Bay Resort near Disney World. The resort’s president said out of 900 units on the property, 48 of them are a complete loss.

Prior to midnight, windows first began blowing out and witnesses reported loud cracking sounds, shaking, and large cracks towards the building’s base. Police and firefighters evacuated the affected area’s buildings within 15 minutes.

Security guard Richard Shanley heroically helped evacuate. He said, “I had to run literally from end to end of the building to get people out. While you are running by, pieces of the building are falling down behind you. ”
