Police fired tear gas at supporters of ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi in Cairo on Sunday as they tried to march towards Tahrir Square during a celebration commemorating Egypt's 1973 war with Israel.

Both opponents and supporters of the Brotherhood had called for more mass protests on Sunday, during celebrations of the anniversary of an Egyptian attack on Israeli forces in the Sinai during the 1973 war.

Riot police and soldiers drove back Mursi supporters as they marched up a broad avenue in downtown Cairo towards Tahrir Square, the focal point of the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak in 2011.
