Private music lessons: Kenneth Gilbert, Harpsichord & Organ

A strange conference is going on in the secluded surroundings of the fine church of Chavagnes en Paillers in Vendée. Two men, the first in his prime, slow of speech and sure of himself, the second a younger artist, tousled and profound, are sitting at a period harpsichord discussing Couperin, Bach, and Froberger. Kenneth Gilbert, the master, gives his point of view in a soft, steady voice; Olivier Baumont, the young concert soloist, replies with his own propositions and arguments. The experience and encyclopaedic knowledge of the older harpsichordist are precious to his disciple, who does not quite manage to play the role of pupil: when this film was made, he was preparing a recording of the complete works of Couperin! So this 'private music lesson' is really an invitation to a summit conference, splendidly lit by Ned Burgess under the inspired direction of Michel Follin.
