Migrants rescued by a U.S. Navy ship arrive in Malta

The USS San Antonio, is called to the scene in the Mediterranean Sea to assist in the rescue more than 100 migrants on a raft.

On Thursday 128 migrants were taken to Malta.

They are said to be in good health.

More than 550 people are feared drowned after two separate disasters this month when boats carrying migrants capsized and sank in the waters between Libya and the southern Italian island of Lampedusa.

Italy has stepped up naval patrols in the area to try to prevent further disasters and along with Malta has called for the crisis to be discussed at the next meeting of the European Council in Brussels later this month.
