Jim Jones And The Jonestown Tragedy
Jonestown was a communal settlement built in the mid 1970s in northwestern Guyana by the Peoples Temple, a cult from California led by Jim Jones, for whom the settlement was named. It stood amidst jungle, about 7 miles (11 km) from Port Kaituma (7°44′N 59°53′W).
Jonestown gained lasting international notoriety in 1978, when nearly its whole population died in a mass murder/suicide ordered by Jones, who was among the 913[1] who perished.
Jonestown was afterward abandoned by the remnants of the Peoples Temple. The site was tended by the Guyanese government, which allowed its reoccupation by Hmong refugees from Laos for a few years in the early 1980s, but it has since been altogether deserted.....
