FROM THE HARD ROCK CAFE, EAGLE PARKING, THE FUNKY UMBRELLA, AND THE RECORD SHOP RECORDING STUDIO
PRESENTED BY CROW
"We're a folk band from Australia. November 2009: The end of a long tour, a broken down RV and a generous friend led Jules and I to New York City. On tour, we camped up the west coast and then half way across Canada. Starting at Dockwhiler in LA and ending in Salt Saint Marie.
We had our guitar cases filled with pot in Willits, hiked through the redwoods in Felton, met long lost relatives in Vancouver Island and stood on top of the Rocky Mountains in Canada. On that tour we played in so many contexts. We opened for Sheryl Crow, played house parties, bars, coffee shops, small festivals and beach parties. We drove further north. The winter set in and the cold was wreaking havoc on the 1979 Southwind we were traveling in. The breakdowns were frequent and she was falling apart. We abandoned ship and rafted to NYC - a curious place to land with empty pockets.
It didn't take long to realize that busking in the subways wasn't quite enough to sustain a life and start a band in New York. So, I had some ideas about where we could live, play music and write together everyday - China. Jules and I had been there before. The first time I was 18, singing in a blues band in Beijing. I had made some friends from different parts of China who helped us find a regular gig and a place to stay. We spent 6 months of the following year in one of the fastest growing cities in the world, Shenzhen. We played in a rock club called 'True Color', six nights a week, spending our days writing music and exploring the city. Coming from 'the city that never sleeps', shenzhen was a totally new experience and made NYC seem kind of narcoleptic.
We missed Australia but getting back to the USA was what we all wanted to do, but where to live? We had spent some time living on the west and east coasts. New York was too expensive and Jules and I weren't really up for living in LA again. Nashville became the most obvious choice. In late 2010 we landed in Tennessee and it was the right decision. We met some great people and started building a life there in a very organic way. We met Matt Sherrod and David Labruyere, who became the rhythm section for our band and a large part of shaping our sound. Our first EP has come about through jams at Matts studio we have been doing throughout the year. It will be available to you very soon. Thanks for taking the time to read about our lives."
