"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" lights up the box office with $161 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales.

That makes it the second-largest seller at movie theaters for 2013 during an opening weekend.

It's the sequel to the 2012 blockbuster "The Hunger Games."

The New York Times writes, "It's largely satisfying as far as screen adventures go, and comes fully loaded with special effects and action scenes, and embellished with the usual brand-name character actors."

The movie is based on a series of novels.

It stars Jennifer Lawrence as the heroine playing a skilled archer who becomes a symbol of hope for an oppressed society.
