Carmen Figueroa resigned her post as an Arizona state police detective following recent news reports that she is not a US citizen.

When hired, Figueroa submitted a written affidavit to the contrary.

She later commented that it was her belief that she’d been born in the US, as that’s what she’d been told by her family.

According to a Department of Public Safety spokesman, evidence that she wasn’t began to emerge over the summer.

It’s believed Figueroa herself found out she was actually born in Mexico during a fight with her mother, but didn’t share the information with her employer.

Her illegal status surfaced when her brother, a member of the US military, applied for a passport. At that time federal authorities were made aware that he had a sister serving as a state police officer in Arizona.

The state requires that all of its sworn law enforcement personnel be American citizens, so had she not resigned she would have been fired.

Throughout her career, it’s said Figueroa was a model officer. After serving as a patrol person for a decade, she was promoted to detective.
