DUBAI: Dubai welcomed the New Year with a stunning display of fireworks that lit up the night sky.

As the city attempted the world's largest fireworks, an explosive display, featuring more than 400,000 fireworks, lit the Dubai skyline.

As the clock struck midnight, a six-minute show illuminated the skies above two of its man-made islands, The Palm Jumeirah and The World, and the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa.

Residents and visitors were impressed.

"It is a very beautiful show, I have been here for seven years. This is the best that I have seen," said Mohammad Abdelrehman, an Egyptian who has been living in the city.

"This is my first time in Dubai for the New Year but I have not seen New Year like this before, it is really incredible," said Kelly Kaczmarek from the United States.

The United Arab Emirates, which is home to the world's largest man-made island and the tallest building, is vying to secure its place on the tourist map as the hub for entertainment in the Middle East.

Organisers hope to make it to the Guinness World Records.

The current record for the largest firework display is held by Kuwait City, Kuwait, which in 2012 celebrated the 50th anniversary of its constitution with a show that featured 77,282 fireworks stretching over 5 kilometres (3.11 miles) of seafront and which lasted 64 minutes. – Reuters..
