Video shows asylum seekers towed back to Indonesia

This video appears to show a lifeboat full of asylum seekers being towed back to Indonesia by an Australian Customs vessel.

The footage has been filmed from inside a lifeboat.

At least one young child can be seen on board the lifeboat and another large vessel can be seen nearby.

A hulled inflatable boat can also be seen alongside.

Indonesian media says the passengers on board were discovered by the Australian authorities off Christmas Island -- a frequent destination for refugee boats from Indonesia and smugglers.

The asylum seekers say they were then transferred from their vessel into this life boat and turned back.

Indonesian police say there were around 50 asylum seekers on board the boat.

This is believed to be at least the sixth turnback operation that has occurred since the new Australian government began the practice at the end of last year.
