CBD is short for cannabidiol, the second most prominent naturally-occurring cannabinoid found in cannabis, comprising up to

40% of the plant.[1] After THC (Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD is by far the most studied natural cannabinoid and is the

cannabinoid that possesses the greatest therapeutic potential. According to many scientists, physicians, and researchers,

CBD may be the single most important cannabinoid ever discovered.

Cannabidiol was first isolated in the 1930s (and further in the 1940s), but its structure and configuration were first

fully described decades later—in the 1960—by Professor Raphael Mechoulam and his team of researchers in Israel. As of early

2014, PubMed.gov—a service of the National Institutes of Health—has indexed over 1,100 peer-reviewed papers on cannabidiol.

Cannabidiol is “a cannabinoid devoid of psychoactive effect,” and may have broad clinical potential for an astonishing

spectrum of ailments. CBD has been shown, in clinical settings, to help relieve convulsions, inflammation, anxiety, nausea,

and other health concerns; in fact, hundreds of peer-reviewed studies indicate that CBD possesses almost unbelievable

clinical potential. A literature review from 2009 recapped CBD’s documented capabilities as an anxiolytic (anti-anxiety),

antipsychotic, antiepileptic, neuroprotectant, vasorelaxant (lower blood pressure), antispasmodic, anti-ischemic, anti-

cancer agent, antiemetic, antibacterial agent, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, and even as a means to stimulate bone

growth. CBD has also been shown to strengthen and improve the efficiency of mitochondria, the “powerhouses” of your cells

that are responsible for ensuring that your cells work the way they should.

CBD is available, on a very limited and tightly restricted basis, as an isolated molecule. CBD is also found in all

cannabis plants, including the varieties known as “marijuana” and industrial hemp. While drug development usually relies on

testing single molecules, there is a growing body of evidence that cannabinoids like CBD are most beneficial when kept as

close to their natural state as possible.
