Machismo Mata (kills) is a documentary short by Sarah Breidenbach and Thomas Gage, who collectively form Reel Health Media, an independent production company with an emphasis on empowerment through information awareness transmitted by the medium of documentary and experimental film. Shot in Puebla Mexico by Sarah Breidenbach, the film explores the stories of several women infected with HIV and attempts to bring to light a little-known cause of the spread of HIV: the culture of "machismo" in Mexico. In Mexico, women have few if any sexual rights and are often the unwitting victims of their male partners who migrate back and forth between the U.S. and Mexico, and throughout Mexico. While away from home these men have unprotected sex with co-workers and sex workers and return to Mexico to infect their loyal housewives, who often are left to raise children alone, their HIV status a carefully guarded secret. The men in Mexico are taught to believe that it is a measure of manhood to have multiple sexual partners, while the women are condemned and often ostracized merely for speaking up about their personal rights.
