During the 5th century of the Second Era, the Night Mother took her following of deadly assassins to wreak havoc across the land, starting with murdering the ruler of Tamriel. This launched a long period of great turmoil known as the Interregnum with the races of the land separated into three factions vying for The Ruby Throne.
The Aldmeri Dominion believe the races of men are naive, looking to restore Elven rule. The Daggerfall Covenant want to bring prosperity to their once wealthy region. And the Ebonheart Pact, despite constantly invading and enslaving each other, have banded together to protect their lands.
While these factions fought amongst one another, a great arcane explosion erupted in the Imperial City. The Daedra, supernatural beings from the plane of Oblivion, poured into the lands of Tamriel. Led by Molag Bal, the Daedric Prince of Domination and Enslavement and other really horrible things, Tamriel is now in danger of merging with Oblivion.
Fortunately, it has been prophesied in the Elder Scrolls that you will stop the machinations of Molag Bal... but he's already captured you and your soul. Now it's up to you to escape his clutches, stop the merger between realms, lead your faction to rule them all, and you know...get your soul back.
