Rebels brace for more violence in Mariupol

A makeshift memorial is growing in Mariupol.

On the steps of the police headquarters, flowers for the dead.

Residents are paying tribute to those killed in fighting between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian rebels on Friday.

After the shootout killed anywhere from seven to 20 people, residents are hoping for peace.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) EUGENIA, MARIUPOL RESIDENT, SAYING:

"To be honest, we can expect anything now. Of course we would like it to end in a peaceful way. It's scary to see all this."

There was no sign of Ukrainian forces Saturday.

Just an armored personnel carrier left abandoned.

It now flies the flag of the Donetsk Republic.

Elsewhere in the city, rebels are bracing for more violence.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) VLADIMIR, PRO-RUSSIAN ACTIVIST, SAYING:

"We received information about the Right Sector being deployed at Mariupol airport. We are expecting them to come in two white vans."
