The two Koreas exchanged artillery fire across the maritime border on Monday (March 31) after North Korea staged a live-fire drill which sent artillery shells into South Korean waters. South Korea evacuated its border island residents amid the live-fire drill.

According to the Yonhap News Agency, North Korea fired about 500 rounds of artillery shells into waters north of the Northern Limit Line in the Yellow Sea between 12:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Some 100 rounds reportedly fell south of the Northern Limit Line into the South Korean waters. The South korean military then fired about 300 rounds of artillery shells into North Korean waters with K-9 self-propelled howitzers. F-15K fighter jets were dispatched near the maritime border.

South Korea evacuated the residents in the border islands of Baengnyeong and Yeonpyeong to temporary shelters, Yonhap News Agency reported. No casualties or injuries have been reported.
