Difference Between Speed and Velocity

• Suppose a car starts moving in a curved path from this point A and travels to point B and then stops at point C.
• Point A is its initial point and point C is its final point.
• The distance from A to B is 60m and from B to C is 30m. So the total distance is 90 meter. And the time it takes to cover this distance is 30 sec.
• Now let’s first find its speed.
• Dividing the total distance by total time here comes speed that is 3m/s
• But for velocity we’ll not calculate whole distance but the displacement from first point A to final point C. and that is 45m.
• Now divide total displacement by total time and we get the velocity by dividing total displacement 45m to total time 30sec. we get the answer of 1.5
• So velocity is 1.5m/sec. toward north.
• So to find speed we’ve to calculate total distance and to find velocity we’ve to calculate total displacement from first point to last point. Simple.
