SOT, Canan Capaloglu, Kartal local (Turkish): "We are very pleased with the recycle bins here. It is very hot now and there aren't too many animals around, but in winter, since we have a lot of hungry animals on the streets, I expect to see a lot of them around."

A new dog-friendly device hit the streets of Istanbul on Monday which aims to increase recycling while providing stray dogs with food and water. The device, designed by Turkish company Pugedon, has containers for water and dog food, and every time a bottle is recycled, a fixed amount of dog food is dispensed.

There are over 150,000 stray dogs and cats living in the city and the phone booth-like machines are a step forward in tackling two major issues in Istanbul: recycling, and the feeding of stray animals. The project is independent from the government and covers the cost of the food with the recycled bottles.
