People often make snap judgments about others based on their physical appearance.

According to a recent study, it takes some people only 100 milliseconds to decide if someone is attractive or not.

For the study, researchers examined one thousand different faces to breakdown their individual features, like facial shape and eye size, into 65 details.

They created a computer model to predict what people’s immediate impressions would be based on facial features.

Then they had people assess social characteristics and attractiveness based solely on the physical appearance of facial features.

The computer model was, for the most part, able to accurately predict how the different faces would get rated.

Tom Hartley, lecturer of psychology at University of York in the United Kingdom, who worked on the study is quoted as saying: “Many of the features that influence predicted ratings in our model are changeable features of the face — related to expression, pose, lighting, camera position, and so on…we may misjudge people based on appearances. ”

The study participants also rated attractiveness of the faces on a scale of one to seven.

Results show that the size or shape of a person’s mouth and eyes were strongly related to how attractive they were rated by the study subjects.
