Robin Williams, a stand-up comic and sitcom star in the 1970s who became an Oscar-winning dramatic actor, died Monday at the age of 63 in Marin County, California. The Marin County Sheriff’s Office said he appears to have committed suicide.
A statement from the assistant chief deputy coroner of Marin County said on Monday that the coroner division of the sheriff’s office “suspects the death to be a suicide due to asphyxia, but a comprehensive investigation must be completed before a final determination is made.”
Williams’ wife Susan Schneider said she was “utterly heartbroken” and hoped “that the focus will not be on Robin’s death.”
“This morning I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings,” she said in a statement. “On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope that the focus will not be on Robin’s death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave millions.”
Among stand-up comedians, Williams will always be considered one of the all-time greats. He rose to nationwide fame in the hit TV series Mork & Mindy as Mork the alien.
Williams was best known for his starring roles in classic comedies like Good Morning, Vietnam, Mrs. Doubtfire and Jumaniji, as well as for dramas like Dead Poets Society.
Williams also spearheaded Comic Relief, a non profit that holds concerts and shows to raise money for the homeless. He will be greatly missed.
