Propaganda in America - Business vs Politicians (5of6) - The Great Depression led Progressive Edward Bernays to doubt that irrational man could be trusted with the Democratic Process. Building on this Progressive President Franklin Roosevelt,(FDR) declares that Laissez-faire economics does not work and Government must manage the economy. This led to the New Deal. NAZI Joseph Goebbels was inspired by Roosevelt's New Deal, and as Hitler's right hand man, Goebbel's incorporated similar thinking in remaking NAZI Germany. However, Roosevelt dismissed Bernay's assessment that irrational man could not be trusted with the Democratic Process. Roosevelt believed the masses to be rational and could be trusted to make intelligent choices. FDR turned to pollsters Roper and Gallup to measure public opinion with strictly factual questions. FDR was reelected on a promise to give even more government control over Big Business. Big Business resented government intrusion and set out to create a campaign against government intrusion into business. Progressive Edward Bernays was put in charge of a public relations campaign to make the pairing of Democracy and Capitalism has accepted and traditional as Bacon and Eggs for breakfast. Our Government responded by warning of deceptive and duplicitous advertizing programs by big business. The Governments response also warned the American masses to think critically so they would not be duped by Big Business's Edward Bernays Emotion based Propaganda campaign. In the end, Progressive Edward Bernays struck back with a campaign that advised the American Public that all the technology and advances which made America great were the work of business and not of government.
