The first ever privately funded migrant rescue mission was officially launched in Malta on Monday.

A 40 metre vessel called "Phoenix 1" left the island's Grand Harbour to carry out its first rescue mission. Millionaire couple Christopher Catrambone, who hails from from the USA, and Regina Catrambone, who is Italian, poured more than 4 million euro (5.2 million dollars), of their own money into the project.

The boat carries two Schiebel CAMCOPTER S-100 UAVs and two RHIB's (rigid hull inflatable boats). The CAMCOPTERS S-100s can be deployed for up to six hours at a time. Phoenix will be on the water for the next six weeks with a 16 member crew on board.

The operation is taking place days after 200 migrants were reported missing after a boat capsized off the coast of Libya. Over the weekend Italy also reported rescuing 3,200 migrants.
