As President Obama prepares to deliver an address to the nation on Wednesday on the threat posed by Islamic State militants, the White House says there are no plans send U.S. ground troops back to Iraq.

During Tuesday's White House briefing, spokesman Josh Earnest said, "There is an important and meaningful role the United States military can play, but the president is not contemplating putting American combat boots back on the ground in Iraq."

Obama is set to meet with lawmakers this week as his administration seeks support for an offensive against the militant group that has seized swathes of Syria and Iraq.
