Typhoon hits southern China

STORY: Strong winds and heavy rain buffeted southern China on Tuesday (September 16), as Typhoon Kalmaegi reached the Chinese island of Hainan and neighbouring Guangdong province, travelling with winds of up to 144 kilometres per hour (89 miles per hour), local media reported.
In Leizhou, Guangdong province, the high winds brought waves crashing down along the waterfront, as locals battled in driving rain to shore up parts of the sea wall that had collapsed.
By 9.40am (0140 GMT) Kalmaegi was pounding the northeastern shore of Hainan, heading in a northwesterly direction towards the provincial capital, Haikou, state media reported, adding that roads to the city were severely disrupted.
As the storm headed away from Hong Kong, the local weather office downgraded their weather warning from a No. 8 signal to a No. 3, indicating strong winds.
