A little dog named Gordo is now recovering after surgery on his hind leg. Gordo was injured in California Wednesday night when a stolen van plowed over him.

Deputies attempted to pull the vehicle over but the van wouldn’t stop. Eventually a California Highway Patrol unit pitted the van and put a stop to the chase.

After the suspects inside the vehicle were apprehended, officials started searching for the dog. Once located, Gordo was swiftly taken to the City of Angels Veterinary Specialty Center in Culver City.

His leg was badly injured and surgeons said his owner would either have to amputate it or have the leg reattached. Veterinarian Dr. Kim Carey stated the decision was made to try to salvage his leg after x-rays and pre-surgery testing was done.

Carey commented “The van was purportedly running on its rims, rather than the tires. We suspect that one of the rims cut his back leg.”

Doctors think Gordo may need more surgeries in the future and the cost of his care and treatment is expected to be thousands of dollars.

The animal hospital has already received thousands in donations from concerned well-wishers who learned of the dog’s story through the media.
