Raw video of a huge popular protest held in Dublin against the introduction of direct domestic water charges. Tens of thousands say: No. This a regressive tax which takes no account of someones ability to pay. Water is a basic human right, access to it should not be dependent on how much money you have.
For decades domestic water has been paid for through general taxation. The government has now established a semi-State company which many suspect will be wholly privatised in the future. Water is not a commodity, water is not a luxury, water is a basic human right. No to the privatisation of water, no to direct water charges. This is one step too far.
Come January 2015 the first regressive water bills arrive at peoples doors, if this government is foolish enough to press ahead with it, it will find that tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, will NOT pay.
