STORY: Smoke could be seen rising high above Syria's Kobani on Sunday (November 9), following a coalition air strike targeting Islamic States militants who have besieged the border town.

The U.S.-led coalition has been targeting the group in Kobani for more than a month.

The arrival of Iraqi Kurdish peshmerga to Kobani with armored vehicles and artillery has helped the coalition effort take back some villages around Kobani.

However, the front lines in the town itself have not changed much, with the eastern part still controlled by the insurgents and the west largely held by the main Syrian Kurdish group the People's Protection Units (YPG) and allied fighters.

Around 150 peshmerga fighters entered Kobani on October 31 in more than a dozen trucks.

They were given a heroes' welcome by Turkish and Syrian Kurds who lined the streets cloaked in Kurdish flags, optimistic that the peshmerga would help turn the tide.
