Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow review of Columns for the SEGA Game Gear developed and published by SEGA. SEGA’s answer to the one-two punch of the Game Boy and Tetris, Nintendo’s rival launched the Game Gear with Columns. Though it was originally designed in 1989, the game is mostly known as the bundled software for the Game Gear. This simple puzzle game was an early example of the match-three puzzler, a genre in which players must create rows of three or more of the same colors. It’s one of the many falling-block games in the wake of Tetris, but Column’s match-three objective, steep challenge and colorful display made it a great alternative for puzzles on the go. Columns offers single-player and local multiplayer on the SEGA Game Gear. This video review features video gameplay footage of Columns for the SEGA Game Gear and audio commentary from Classic Game Room's Derek.
