BUDGIE and guests – 'THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT' Live show (Hong Kong, 07 Nov 2010)

During 2010, drummer Budgie (ex-Siouxsie & The Banshees and ex-The Creatures) brought together with him on stage two charismatic drummers (Mabi from South Africa and Leonard Eto from Japan) and two talented guitarists (Sugizo also from Japan and Knox Chandler from USA) for a show titled "The Butterfly Effect" that took place on November 6th (Sat / 8pm) & 7th (Sun / 3pm) at 'Sha Tin Town Hall Auditorium' at the town centre of the Sha Tin District in Hong Kong. This is the press release for those two shows:

The Butterfly Effect: East-West Percussive Parade
World Première

A star-studded celebration of life and creative energy. A pulsating musical performance exploring "the butterfly effect"...

If the flap of a butterfly's wings could have a ripple effect on global events, think of the far-reaching implications when drummers' arms take the place of such wings!

The Butterfly Effect: East-West Percussive Parade is a vibrant and intuitive drumming extravaganza, featuring Western kit, Japanese taiko and African drums that will launch the musicians into a new sonic galaxy!

The inspiration for bringing together master drummers from different countries for this invigorating show came from Budgie, the innovative drummer with internationally acclaimed British groups The Slits, Siouxsie And The Banshees, and The Creatures, and a musician renowned for his eclectic style.

Alongside him is Japan's taiko master Leonard Eto, who joined the Japanese taiko group Kodo in 1984, serving as principal player and music director before pursuing a solo career in 1992. Eto collaborated with Budgie on The Creatures' 2003 album Hai! and performed on the subsequent "Dreamshow" tour in 2004.

The third drummer, Mabi, is one of South Africa's most venerable jazz and fusion musicians. Mabi, also known for making his own drums, has performed globally since the 1970s, with a Miles Davis encounter in San Francisco making a lasting impact on his music.

Adding to the excitement are renowned guitarist Knox Chandler whose credentials include The Psychedelic Furs, Depeche Mode, R.E.M., Cyndi Lauper, Siouxsie And The Banshees and The Creatures, and top rock guitarist Sugizo, a member of superbands Luna Sea and X Japan. Together, these two special guests create music that floats and entwines with the rhythms of the drummers to produce a concert of stunning impact.

In the programme are improvised solos and ensemble works as well as new pieces and arrangements specially created for the New Vision Arts Festival (15 Oct – 21 Nov 2010), inspired by the pace, rhythm and character of Hong Kong.

An amazing show that rides the waves of creativity to produce an unbeatable drum drama!

Note: I’ve edited two amateur videos from the second date of the event (7 Nov 2010), the first featuring Budgie introducing the artists at the beginning of the show and the second showing all of them playing (part of) Siouxsie & The Banshees 1978 hit single "Hong Kong Garden" for the encore.
