Andrea Wan
Born in Hong Kong, raised in Vancouver and now based in Berlin, globe-trotting artist Andrea Wan is known for her vibrant, graphic style and use of acrylic ink and gouache. Her typically intricate -- and at times surreal -- pieces usually feature animals, people, plants and strange landscapes as their subjects, and are rendered in her signature color scheme of black and white interspersed with bright colors. Working mainly with acrylic ink on watercolor paper, Wan begins each piece by loosely sketching to get a feeling for the composition or starting directly on the paper (eschewing a more precise method), after which she begins to add layers of ink, beginning with a light layer and then adding more as she progresses.
This short film was directed by Sylvie Weber and profiles the artist in her studio as she provides insight into her childhood, transition to illustrating and signature style. .
