Italy courtroom shooting timeline: gunman kills judge, two others because he wanted 'revenge'

Three people were killed after a gunman opened fire inside the Palace of Justice in Milan on Thursday morning.

Claudio Giardiello, a defendant who was on trial for fraudulent bankruptcy, reportedly opened fire at a lawyer and his co-defendant before entering the office of Judge Fernando Ciampi and shooting him dead. A fourth person was also reportedly injured when he was shot in the leg.

Giardiello fled the scene on a motorbike, although it is unclear how he managed to exit the building. Police traced his whereabouts by following his license plate on surveillance cameras and found Giardiello at a shopping center in the northern town of Vimercate, where he was arrested. Giardiello had reportedly planned to also shoot his business partner.

Giardiello reportedly said after he was apprehended that he carried out the shooting because he wanted "revenge".

Officials are looking into how Giardiello managed to smuggle a weapon into the courthouse and use it before escaping the scene.
