Foolish woman defies death: almost drowned windsurfing, became entangled in her own lines

A tourist from Hong Kong almost drowned off the coast of Hualien, located along Taiwan’s eastern coast, because she refused to cut the line of her windsail.
The woman was traveling alone, biking around the island of Taiwan, and had met some local friends while passing through Hualien. The friends had offered to lend her their equipment so that she could go windsurfing.
Taking them up on the offer she lugged herself and the equipment out to the beach and prepared for a day of fun in the sun with the wind and waves.
She chose a beach with no lifeguard, confident in her skills no doubt. However, witnesses said that within minutes the woman had become hopelessly tangled in the lines of the sail. They called for emergency services, but by the time the ambulance and coast guard had arrived the woman had dragged herself, sail and all, onto the beach.
A paramedic moved to cut the twisted mess of lines from the woman’s ankle but she stopped him. She refused to allow him to cut the lines, because she said the windsurfing equipment was borrowed and she couldn’t afford to replace it.
So the coast guard and paramedics patiently helped her untangle the mess and treated her for her scrapes and bruises. The woman then refused any additional medical care, probably because she couldn’t afford that either, and headed off to return the windsurfing equipment.
She’s lucky emergency authorities were patient enough to help her out of that tangle.
