Saratoga Springs, Utah police officers killed Darrien Hunt last month while Hunt was carrying a replica samurai sword as part of a cosplay outfit that looked a lot like Mugen from Samurai Champloo.
In an upscale city where less than 1% of the population is black, a man with a two-and-a-half foot sword and an afro is almost guaranteed to trigger a 911 call. Police responded to the call and chatted with Hunt moments before the shooting. Hunt even asked them for a ride.
Police say, “Hunt brandished the sword and lunged toward officers with the sword.” Officers then opened fire at the 22-year-old who ran from them after the first gunshots.
It’s unknown whether Hunt was holding the sword at this time but officers are believed to have continued firing while pursuing the suspect. Hunt eventually collapsed in front of a Panda Express about 100 yards from where he was initially approached by authorities.
An autopsy revealed that Hunt was struck two times in the left arm. But the four bullet wounds in his body all came from behind.
Cpl. Matthew Schauerhamer and Officer Nicholas Judson have been place on paid administrative leave. An investigation is ongoing.
