Post World War II, the world is coming to terms with peace and prosperity. Young author Charles Wills (Van Johnson) meets Helen Ellswirth (Elizabeth Taylor) in the Paris of today, along with her sister Marion. Charles falls for Helen and marries her. They have a whirlwind romance but Marion does not quite approve of it. However, soon they face ill luck as Charles fails to succeed as an author professionally. Charles decides to leave Helen and seek other options. Years have passed and Charles reflects on his decision.
