A sessions court in Mumbai on Wednesday found Bollywood superstar Salman Khan guilty in the 2002 hit-and-run case. The court is slated to announce the quantum of sentence on Wednesday. He has been taken into custody and may be shifted to Arthur Road jail.

The actor broke down in court after the verdict. Salman’s whole family including father Salim Khan, brother Arbaaz and Sohail, sisters Arpita and Alvira are present in the court to hear the verdict.

Salman Khan has been found guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder (IPC 304-2), Injuring (337), driving without a licence, driving under influence, not informing of accident, hit and run and reckless driving.

The judgement in the over 12-year-old case, whose trial saw many twists and turns, was delivered by Judge D W Deshpande where the 49-year-old actor and his family were present. Significantly, the court held that Salman was driving under the influence of alcohol and also did not have a driving license.

The court relied upon judgement in Alistair Pereira and Sanjeev Nanda BMW case of Delhi while convicting Salman. It also asked what he had to say on the verdict to which he denied charges saying he was not driving the car at the time of mishap.

As the court delivered the verdict, Salman had tears in his eyes and stood silently in the dock. After the conviction, his lawyer began arguments on quantum of punishment in the case.

He will taken to Mumbai’s Arthur Road jail immediately after the pronouncement of the quantum of sentence. As the sentence is of more than 2 years, there is no possibility of an immediate bail.
