Gas explosion due to cheap repairman using glue instead of replacing parts

In Pingtung, last month an elderly couple and their gas repairman were almost blown to smithereens after a shoddy repair job.

The wife, age 70, of the retired elderly couple noticed the smell of leaking gas while she was cooking, so her husband, age 72, called their local gas repair man.

The repairman, identified by his last name Hong, age 60, showed up at the couple’s house and said it was only a leaky pipe. Instead of replacing the pipe he said he could fix it with a little bit of glue.

Allegedly, Mr. Hong left the flow on to see if the leak had been repaired, thus accidentally filling the room with gas. Then he asked the wife to turn on the stove to make sure hadn’t glued the entire pipe shut.

That’s when everything exploded.

Mr. Hong and the couple were sent to the hospital with burns and concussive injuries. The elderly couple have both injured their arms and have severe burns to their faces. Mr. Hong has burn marks on his face and across 10% of his torso. All three of them are still being held in intensive care.

Thankfully, neither of the houses next to the elderly couple’s residence were damaged, although glass from their windows were blown across the street.
