Gaza War 2014: militants claim capture of Israeli soldier after bloodiest day of fighting

Sunday, July 20th, was the bloodiest day since Israel began 'Operation Protective Edge,' an operation Israel says is necessary to root out Hamas militants firing rockets into Israel.

Eighty-seven Palestinian militants and civilians were killed in Israeli military operations in Gaza on Sunday while 13 Israeli troops lost their lives.

The United Nations says since the fighting began two weeks ago, 425 Palestinians have been killed, with 70% of that number believed to be civilians.

So far 18 Israeli soldiers have lost their lives, while Israel has sustained two civilian casualties.

Also on Sunday, the armed wing of Hamas told the media it had captured an Israeli soldier.

The capture has not been independently confirmed or acknowledged by the Israeli military, but more than one source has called Hamas' claim credible.

Experts say Hamas is keen to capture Israeli troops in hopes of negotiating prisoner swaps such as one in 2001, when over 1000 Palestinians serving time in Israeli jails were swapped for a single Israeli soldier.

Corporal Gilad Shalit was taken prisoner in 2006 and his 2011 return marked the first time a captured Israeli soldier had been released alive in over two decades.
