Aviagen Group, the US' largest chicken breeder that provides 25% of the chicken for the poultry industry in the United States have discovered that its standard Ross male breed has a man-made genetic flaw that's making them infertile.

A group of scientists sent by Aviagen to look into the issue discovered that the roosters were overfed, causing them to not want to breed.

Sanderson Farms, the third-largest poultry provider in the US and one of Aviagen's biggest customer said that about 17% of the eggs fertilized by that particular breed failed to hatch last year.

Aviagen admitted that an undisclosed change in the breed's genetics had made the roosters very sensitive to being overfed.

This issue is causing a shortage of chicken that is already suffering from a short supply of breeding birds, thus, pushing up chicken prices. This shortage has caused a rise up of 50 cents per pound on chicken breasts.

Aviagen have replaced the breed to another kind to mate with the same hens, and says the result have been favorable so far.
