Malaysian police say they attempted to confront three suspicious-looking individuals in a parked red sedan in a residential neighborhood on Friday night, but the vehicle rammed a police motorcycle and sped away.

The suspect's vehicle led police on a high speed chase along the the MRR2 freeway during which Malaysian media reports eight cars and two motorcycles were rammed or hit by the suspect's car.

Malaysian police said they fired at least four shots at the vehicle after the driver refused to end the chase, with a police official defending the shooting as a last-resort measure.

After being hit by police bullets, the car came to a stop at the side of the freeway and the officers discovered the driver had been shot in the head. He died at a hospital early Saturday morning.

Police arrested the other two occupants of the car and reports say machetes, an airgun and stolen items were found in the vehicle. Police say the car was later found to have been reported stolen and a handbag found in the car was confirmed as one of the items taken during a robbery on Friday afternoon in the Wangsa Maju area.

Police arrested the two remaining occupants of the car, one and one woman, and say they will be investigated for attempted murder, robbery and car theft.
