Forming Spiritual Resources in a Secular Environment: Gatherings of the Nur Community

Abstract

The “secular age” has had a significant impact on the spirituality of people. It is often believed that this influence of secularism has been widening the dichotomy between religion and secularism. This paper will argue otherwise. As a case study, the research focuses on secular Turkey’s Nur community and its spiritual study circles (dersanes) in the modern environment. It demonstrates that the emergence of Turkish secularism resulted in a critical engagement with issues of faith. In that sense, secularism created a venue for deepening individual religiosity. The study will begin with a brief context of the rise of modern Turkey. It will be followed by an analysis of the foundation of the Nur community and its spiritual study circles (dersanes) as a reaction to this new establishment. The last part of this study will be an evaluation of the effects of secularism on spirituality.
