We know the Kardashian Pretty Committee is essentially a traveling squad of makeup artists and hairstylists, dedicated to getting the girls glam. They have a huge following of their own: each pro has at least 100K followers on Instagram, proving that people are simply intrigued with the Kardashian/Jenner makeup process.
So what could we do to show people how to get their exact look? A tutorial was a must, but instead of DIYing it, we decided to go straight to the source: recruit a member of the Pretty Committee for a full-on transformation. We were lucky enough to book Etienne Ortega, celebrity hair and makeup artist, for the shoot. Etienne has a bevy of celebrity clients, like Hilary Duff, Becky G, and Kelly Rowland, and works on Kim, Khloé, Kendall, and Kylie, meaning he has all of the insider details needed to make the transformation as realistic as possible. (We couldn't confirm if he's gotten his hands on Kourtney.)
As the model for the transformation, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't thrilled for this shoot. I really love their makeup look, and I'm a fan of Etienne's in general, so getting the glam treatment and learning his tricks was exciting to me. I could barely sleep the night before - I felt like a kid on Christmas Eve!
The process
It is a lot of makeup, but remember: these women are on-camera a majority of their lives! They need staying power. Plus, you tend to wear more makeup on-camera than not. He doesn't wet the Beauty Blender sponge when he applies the foundation, so even though he buffs the makeup out beautifully, there's more coverage there than when you wet the sponge and blend it out. And one thing to note: no foundation was put near my eye area. Instead, it was covered when he went in for the highlight.
The eyes were relatively simple, which is surprising given how intricate the look seems. Instead of loading up on a ton of coats of mascara, he leaves the drama to individual lashes. The bronze smokey eye - the signature Kardashian look we were going for - took the least amount of time to apply.
As for the lips, I now understand how lip liner does make a huge difference in the shape and size of your mouth. (Regardless of if you have temporary fillers or not.) Etienne contoured outside of my lips to make them appear larger and then filled in with a beige shade of lipstick to give the appearance of a plumper pout.
Etienne said all the girls wear hair extensions to help them achieve a desired look at events and red carpets, and I was mesmerized by his application. My hair is naturally a short bob, and he added 20" Bellami Hair Extensions (yes, the ones by Kylie!) to my hair. He blended them seamlessly, even though they weren't a perfect match for my hair color.
Overall, Etienne said the process takes around 2-2 1/2 hours for full hair and makeup for each sister, except Kourtney, who doesn't like to sit in the chair that long. He did want to stress that when they aren't having to work, they keep it makeup free. "These are beautiful girls to begin with, and when they aren't working, they don't wear makeup. But they're working almost every day!" said Etienne.
Check out the total transformation and watch our interview with Khloé to find out where they get those giant salads from while you're at it!
