Lottery fraudster busted: Iowa's 'mystery man' US$14 mil lotto winner was company's ex security boss
Iowa officials have finally solved the case of the "mystery lotto winner" from 2010. Eddie Raymond Tipton, 51, was a security chief for Iowa's 'Hot Lotto' company, but it's alleged that in November 2010, Tipton hacked the office cameras so they didn't record him uploading a self-destructing program that instructed the system to randomly select a number that he had chosen.
Not long after, a 'mystery man' won the US$14.3 million jackpot, but no one claimed the prize. A person did try and collect and did produce the valid ticket, but lottery officials did not release the jackpot as the person did not reveal info that could prove the was the rightful winner.
In January 2015, Tipton was identified and charged with "illegally playing the lottery," but after his arrest, the scale of his Mission Impossible-like feat was revealed. Now he's in a lot more trouble after authorities discovered he re-programmed cameras, installed complicated software and enlisted at least two others to aid in this almost clever fraud.
