Malaysiakini sees the problem of Syariah divorce cases through the eyes of a single mother.
Atikah Zahar is a Singaporean woman who is seeking justice after a failed marriage to a Malaysian man whom she had been married to for six years. Just like most women, she had wished for a normal blissful marriage.
However, for most of the six years of marriage, she had suffered from what she alleges to be domestic violence by her husband.
She also claimed that her in-laws had been abusive not only verbally but also to the extent of locking her up in her own room.
Atikah had no other choice but to file for a divorce and fight for full custody of her son.
