In the 1950s Britain emerged from the gloom of its post-war austerity and enjoyed an explosion of new, acting talent that was unique to this period of social upheaval. Gaining their experience through an established network of repertory theatres, RADA and the new National Theatre established by Sir Laurence Olivier at the Old Vic, many of those who would go on to become acting legends experienced their first exposure on stage and screen as part of the British Free Cinema movement.
