Sunday, August 31, 1997. Diana, Princess of Wales, the ex-wife of the heir to the British throne, dies following a car accident beneath the Alma bridge in Paris.
The death of the world’s most famous woman plunges the planet into a state of shock and provokes unprecedented confusion in Great Britain. While a wave of emotion and grief submerges the country, Tony Blair, elected by a landslide victory in May the same year, immediately senses that a major shift is happening, as though the whole country had lost a sister, a mother, or a daughter. At Balmoral Castle in Scotland, Elizabeth II remains silent, distant, seemingly indifferent.
Completely thrown by the British people’s reaction, she doesn’t understand the wave of shock that is shaking the country. Tony Blair feels it’s up to the country’s leaders to comfort the wounded nation and he must absolutely find a way to bring the Queen closer to her grief-stricken subjects.
