NEW YORK — A pedestrian was killed on Monday evening in New York City after a sport utility vehicle flipped onto the sidewalk and hit him.
The accident happened at around 5:30 p.m. in Brooklyn. A man in a Nissan Sentra was driving on Flatbush Avenue, apparently trying to prevent another car from overtaking, the New York Daily News reported.
The driver lost control of the vehicle and the car hurtled over fallen leaves, flipped onto the sidewalk, took down a tree as it flipped over twice and then landed upside down in front of a beauty shop, NBC News reported.
Surveillance videos obtained by NBC News show a man walking on the sidewalk in the direction of the car while talking on the phone. In the video, the pedestrian notices the car coming towards him and tries to avoid it, before getting fatally hit.
Three other people, including the driver, a 3-year-old passenger, and a 59-year-old woman hit by car debris were transported to Kings County Hospital with minor injuries.
This is the 12th fatal accident in New York City since Halloween.
Despite the high number of accidents in less than two weeks, Mayor Bill De Blasio defended his Vision Zero Plan, a traffic safety program aimed at ending traffic deaths and injuries saying that last year's number of pedestrian deaths was the lowest in a century.
"Vision Zero is working," Blasio was quoted by NBC News as saying. "This has just begun. This is an effort that is just over a year old and is already yielding real results,” he said.
Under the program, dozens of intersections in New York City were made safer for cars and pedestrians and the city’s speed limit was lowered to 25 mph.
