The number of Americans filing for first-time unemployment benefits fell last week, an indication the labor market is improving.
Initial jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs across the U.S., decreased by 5,000 to a seasonally adjusted 271,000 in the week ended Nov. 14, the Labor Department said Thursday.
Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal had expected 270,000 new claims last week.
