OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA — A man was killed on December 19 after his car sped through a metal parking lot barrier and into an estuary in Oakland, California, CBS San Francisco reports.

The driver and sole occupant died on route to hospital after a diver with the Alameda Fire Department pulled him from the submerged Toyota SUV following the 7 a.m. accident.

Witnesses reported seeing the vehicle speed through a parking lot near the Nob Hill Foods grocery store on Blanding Avenue. The car then jumped on to the sidewalk and smash through the barrier dividing the lot from the Oakland Estuary, CBS reports.

Cashier Brian Tetirick responded to witness who had come calling for help from someone who could swim. The Contra Costa Times reports Tetirick dove in, still fully dressed
and attempted several times to find the car but was hampered by the pre-dawn darkness.

"It became completely black, I couldn't even see my hands. I didn't even think about it," Tetirick told the news site.

The car was pulled from the water shortly after 10 a.m., the report added.

Witnesses say the SUV appeared to smash through the safety barrier without slowing down, though the crash remains under investigation.
